At a previous company of mine, they wanted to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic by building an informative site with ways to keep safe, and answers to common questions as a public service. Turn around was about 2 weeks.

How Might We…

  • Address the concerns and confusions the public may have with the current pandemic, in a way that’s quick, clear, and not scary.
  • Create confidence and authority in a world existing with distrust in “fake news”.
  • Best use an unconventional navigation system, that’s not very efficient.

Should be…

  • Quick accessible
  • Easily shareable
  • No frills (nothing to buy)
  • Public good in mind

Business Goals

Sales potential. Sell the platform we build to other organizations as an adaptive “plug-and-play” solution.

Audience

  • Everyone
  • Potential buyers to the framework

Good bedside manners

When putting together the design direction for this project, there wasn't much time to think about what to do. However, I did care that the general public needed to find a dependable source of information from this site, and appearances were important to establishing this trust.

Of course, the place a person typically feels they can trust medical advisory is from a doctor or a doctor's office. I landed on three pillars that made for a great design direction.

Neumorphism
It's a design trend, but one that made sense. The look of Neumorphism really lends itself to a clean and clinical feel, tactile, and not too off putting. It invited touch, and thus, interaction with the intended design.

New concepts in health care

I drew inspiration from new healthcare concepts, like Carbon Health and Forward Health. They've addressed chronic issues that have made patients uncomfortable within a medical environment. What's more, the theatrics of the experience seemed exciting as equally as appropriate

Neue Haas Unica
The right typeface needed to be selected to keep the sense of trust going. Neue Haas Unica was clean, direct, but not cold. It felt approachable and trustworth. Imagine a doctor with one of the best bedside manner as a typeface! That's what I saw in it

Animation as Communication

One challenge I faced was something that came from one of the c-suite executives. They wanted to use a "hub and spoke" type of navigation. This kind of navigation flies in the face of proper UX, but it presented me with an opportunity to create a solution with gravitas.

The solution was in using micro interactions to communicate to the user information hierarchy and their movement within the experience.

Working with Developers

The developer working on our team was fantastic, as she had a sense of creativity when it came to solving for ways to achieve what we wanted to do. I was there every step of the way to help assist with this problem solving and ensure delivery came out as intended.

Style sheets are built in to apps like Figma, Zeplin, or Abstract. But at times I like to supplement with some of my own notes.
